Valuing God also means valuing ourselves

Valuing God means valuing ourselves

First and foremost, let me share to you a story on how I realized this truth.

Last year, (and I can still remember it was Thursday afternoon), my spiritual adviser Ate Yheng invited me and my friends to Rizal park just for bonding and small talks about God as well.

For your info, I once met Ate Yheng just along talisay trees of our campus while I was waiting for my next subject…

It was when I was at my lowest point, when I couldn’t understand the things that are happening in all aspects of my life. Suddenly, I noticed a lady on her mid twenties looking at me and asked a question I could no longer remember, just to break the ice. On that fateful day, God touched my life and I came to accept Him as my God and personal savior.

Ate Yheng is a missionary of a national Christian community and she evangelizes just around universities in the University Belt.

She wanted to spread God’s word to many young people as possible… and because I have a wide circle of friends, she wanted to reach out to them through me. [Boast successfully inserted. Haha. Kidding.]

When I heard of her invitation that she will be inviting my friends for about a thirty-minute Bible study, doubts encircled my mind.

You see, my friends sometimes tease me ‘manang’, lola (or grandma); because I am naturally a conservative girl, sticked to my values, philosophies and religious norms. They know me as very spiritual, who always talks about inspirational insights and about God. (And I’m not saying I’m a very kind person!)

My friends aren’t that aloof when talking about God. I just sometimes feel it’s a hard thing talking to them about the topic because they aren’t open to it.

Then I told Ate Yheng about my doubts

“My circle of friends aren’t all Catholic. Some are Buddhists, Born-Again Christian and even Atheist. I think they will be having a hard time understanding the topic”

Ate Yheng told me, “No, I’ll just talk to them. I won’t manipulate their beliefs”.

Feeling a profound sense in her words, I agreed to her invitation.

Realizing your Worth

Ate Yheng asked us a question: “If you saw a 1000 peso bill soaked in a mud, will you still get it?”

All of us answered “Yes!”

“What if it has been stepped on many times, will you still get it?”

Yes of course!

“What if it has been crumpled and torn out?”

“Certainly!”

In a few seconds, silence dominated us. Then Ate Yheng asked us, “Why?”

Wilson, my Atheist friend, answered: “Because even though it has been crumpled, torn out and stepped upon many times, its value is still the same”

“Exactly! Just like when we at our lowest point in our lives, God will still pick us up because we are valuable!”

After realizing this notion, a thought suddenly comes in my mind.

Our reason for being is all about life, and life is all about God.

Valuing God, giving importance to Him, worshipping Him also means valuing ourselves. If we value God, we value our life and ourselves.

I pray that you would value God just as you value yourself.

God bless us!
